Jordan Pickford’s reputation and profile has soared during this World Cup, and for good reason. The 24 year old keeper continued the heroics displayed during the penalty shootout against Columbia when England met Sweden on Saturday.
Having been Sunderland’s stand out performer (making 135 saves from 185 shots on target and giving him a save ratio of nearly 73%) he was a logical choice for Southgate for the challenge in Russia.
Some have questioned his height – at just over six feet, he is quite short in terms of modern goalkeeper standards. However, his courage and agility that have so far served England very well in Russia have made these questions unfounded. Pickford’s efforts over the past week have cemented the probability that England have a goalkeeper that could serve them well for the next decade.
